The last time I was there , it was spring.

I felt healthy and limber and whipsharp and headstrong. I was there on business but after five oclock, the night was mine.

I would run. Over the bridge, down the stairs and onto the beach. Up and down. The humidity in the frigid air soothed my lungs in a way I was not used to at home. I ran farther longer.

Made friends with strangers. Drank wine at bars. Walked in the rain. Saved money where I could.

I recall community gardens. Children’s hospitals. Sea turtles. Walls of lights. The giant entwined engagement rings whose diamonds light up after dark. There is so much art in that town.

I snapped photos of my flushed skin in the elevator back up to my room. At the time I couldn’t think of a better way to remember the exhilaration in my breath, the excitement in my eyes.

I miss Vancouver.
